John Kay, the band leader, principle writer, lead singer, and guitarist was born in West Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1963 finally arriving in the United States in 1965 gigging in New York and then San Franciscowith a group called Sparrow before settling on the name Steppenwolf and the City of Los Angeles in 1968. John's tri-part national perspective gives him an extremely astute view of the current scene and he is an always intelligent and vocal observer. Jerry Edmonton, the group's drummer hasbeen with John since the days of Sparrow. He, like John, is from Canadaand followed John in the group's odyssey from Canada to New York to SanFrancisco to Los Angeles. Organist Goldie McJohn is also Canadian born and the last original member of Sparrow and Steppenwolf. He is an organistwhose tremendously varied interest and understanding of music, classicalas well as rock and blues, allows him to add incredible complexity andtexture to the music of the band. George Biando is from Los Angeles.A finebass player who had worked with a long sucession of L.A. groupsbefore joining Steppenwolf, he is a writer as well as a player and as penned several of the group's recorded songs. Kent Henry on guitar rounds out the group. Kent was a well known studio musician and rock guitar teacher before settling into the group.
